Wow!  For a Doom Metal band Sweden’s Kongh seems overly energetic in their approach to the genre.  Maybe it’s all the Power Metal there?

Now don’t be fooled we still have the 10 minute plus song lengths and some traditional Death Metal stuff here with the slow plodding vocals and guitar work in the song ‘Skymning’.  Overall though, especially with the first two songs, ‘Sole Creation’ and ‘Tamed Brute’ We have tunes that musically is faster paced with catchy, trance like riffs and with vocals that are dominant and not lost in the ambience of the music. ENFORCER

I have always been a fan of the early New Wave Of Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) sound which was so instrumental in spearheading the surge in heavy metal popularity in the early to mid-80’s before you had the mega successful bands finally able to be financed by mega record labels and placed inside recording studios to give them a ultra polished production sound to help them sell a million copies of their record.

As the metal scene/sound  evolved during the 80’s and beyond I noticed that the bands tended sound more and more removed in their recording due to the production of their albums which to me sometimes would make the band’s sound seem sterile and detached sometimes.  I also understand time marches on but sometimes at the cost of losing that something special that once made the band great.  I once read where Tom G. Warrior once stated that when he first heard the sounds of early Metallica and the American Thrash bands of the mid-80’s it was so different from the European bands of the time.  He said the European bands sounded more like pub bands in their studio sound and the American bands had a more of a clinical sound.  Though those early thrash bands still had that special warm sound and not the polished sound we hear today.  But that old sound was a sound that helped us identify with those bands and feel we were a part of what they were doing.

Now that we live in a age where more people are able to have bands, record their music and be more creative without the pressure of a record label CEO telling a band how to sound, we are beginning to see bands go to a more stripped down form of recording their mixes and leaving the raw aggression and youth sound in their music.

This brings us to the Swedish band Enforcer.  Enforcer has taken up the torch of the old NWOBHM sound and applied it to their sound, image, lyrics and style.  And all I can say is what a breath of fresh air it is.  From start to bottom of their album “Death by Fire” you have classic early 80’s metal in the youthful high ranges vocals, the intimate, warm, sound of the old school way of recording their songs, the twin guitars, and the catchy choruses.

Songs like ‘Death Rides The Night’ is pure NWOBHM as is the instrumental ‘Crystal Suite’ which will make you think you are listening to old Iron Maiden…as in Maiden’s debut album/Killers old.  Here you will hear a style all in the form of those old bands from the early 80’s.  Bands like Angel Witch, Praying Mantis, Exciter, Venom, Diamond Head and early Iron Maiden are all obvious influences here.

This album reminds of a time when if you were a kid in the 80’s you would buy a record and sit in your room, that was filled with posters of metal bands (and scantly glad women), for hours listening to the album on your record player as you look over the albums artwork and photos of the band just to know more about them.

I really can’t get enough of the sound on this album and just the raw enthusiasm of the songs, and the songs themselves are really great with catchy hooks and excellent guitar work.

I don’t think Enforcer is an aberration either.  You have bands like Skullfist, White Wizzard, Holy Grail, Lost Society and a slew of other younger bands who are trying to go after this sound.  I feel this is a telling sign that our youth of today, no longer influenced either by MTV or radio, who is wanting to strip away the clean image and glitter that, pervades our pop music and even some our metal scene of today and just ROCK and be rebellious.  A sound that makes you feel as if you are THERE.

Go out and get Enforcer’s ‘Death By Fire’ and experience the resurgence of what helped make Heavy Metal great to begin with.

ENFORCER Interviewed In Vienna (Video)

On February 12, Stormbringer.at webzine conducted an interview with Swedish metallers ENFORCER before their concert at Viper Room in Vienna, Austria. You can now watch the chat below.

ENFORCER released its new album, “Death By Fire”, on February 1 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD artwork was created by Jonathan Hultèn of Necromantic Art and can be seen below.

“Death By Fire” track listing:

01. Bells Of Hades
02. Death Rides This Night
03. Run For Your Life
04. Mesmerized By Fire
05. Take Me Out Of This Nightmare
06. Crystal Suite
07. Sacrificed
08. Silent Hour / The Conjugation
09. Satan

The official video for the song “Mesmerized By Fire” from ENFORCER can be seen below. The clip was filmed with director, and the band’s longtime friend, Gustav Öhman Spjuth. The group states: “We really feel we have something special to show this time, and it’s definitely not just any other video.”

The “Mesmerized By Fire” seven-inch single was released on January 18.

The track listing for the effort is as follows:

Side A: “Mesmerized By Fire”
Side B: “You Can Be” (non-album track)

In addition to the limited-edition vinyl, there was also be a digital release.

Commented ENFORCER guitarist/vocalist Olof Wikstrand: “‘Mesmerized By Fire’ is more or less the title track from the ‘Death By Fire’ album. I think within four minutes it captures pretty much everything about ENFORCER: intensity and power mixed with a touch of melody and melancholy. The B-side is a cover of NAGAZAKI‘s ‘You Can Be’. It is a track with mega potential from a band that unfortunately never made it in the ’80s.”

ENFORCER‘s second album, “Diamonds”, was released in May 2010 in Europe by Earache Records and in the rest of the world through Heavy Artillery.

Having released its debut album, “Into the Night”, in November 2008, ENFORCER kicked open the floodgates for the return of traditional heavy metal, paving the way for many other young bands to follow. With critical acclaim pouring in from fans and the international music press, ENFORCER wasted no time taking their show to the road for their first European and American tours as well as a litany of appearances at many of Europe’s most highly regarded festivals.

YEAR OF THE GOAT: New Video From Swedish Occult Metal Sect Now Playing

Blazing with over fifty minutes of supreme, metallic occult rock, Angels’ Necropolis, the infernal debut album from YEAR OF THE GOAT, has been claiming mass praise from  heavy metal fans and critics alike, elevating this new act in the ranks of the scene quickly.

A brilliantly infectious album highlighting classic metal/occult rock harmonies Östergötland/Norrköping, Sweden-based quintet seemingly permeate the air around them with, rather than “perform” or “execute,” the atmospheric permeation of the eight rituals which comprise their Angel’s Necropolis offering form the proper conditions to transport the listener to another plane of existence; a meditative state in tribute to Lucifer and his legions. The album was released on CD, LP and digitally worldwide via Ván Records, also liable for bringing The Devil’s Blood, The Ruins Of Beverast, Nagelfar and others into the cult spotlight over the last decade.

This week YEAR OF THE GOAT has set loose a brand new video for the track “Spirits Of Fire,” showcasing the incredibly hooks and melodies the band have seemingly perfected, depicted in a psychedelic 70s Occult horror  theme.

“Necropolis flat-out fucking rocks. Comprising tuneful and intricate ’70s metal steeped in a devout, shadowy Satanism, the disc skirts the edges of prog and doom without losing its solid footing in masterful classic rock and the infernal art of the anthem.” – A.V. Club

“This record is a statement that good music can still be written which has its reference to the 70s era. YEAR OF THE GOAT have claimed that malevolent structure, Angel’s Necropolis, to perform their darkest arts and spread the worship of the dark Lord. 9/10” – Metal Temple

“…a wildly dynamic record imbued with rich, vintage tones and ritualistic songwriting and lyrics. 9/10” – Soundshock
