New SLAYER, ANTHRAX Touring Drummer JON DETTE: BENANTE And LOMBARDO Are My Biggest Influences

Eric Blair of “The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show” conducted an interview with drummer Jon Dette (TESTAMENT, SLAYER, ANTHRAX, ANIMETAL USA) at this year’s NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, a massive music-products convention that took place January 24-27 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. On how he came to play with ANTHRAX:

Dette: “Actually, Jason Bittner from SHADOWS FALL, who was filling in for Charlie [Benante, ANTHRAX drummer] on this last ANTHRAX run last year, couldn’t do one of the tours that was coming up and called me and asked me if I would be available to do it. And I said, ‘Of course. It would be great.’ And the next day Charlie called me — which, Charlie is one my biggest influences ever, next to [Dave] Lombardo [of SLAYER], so it was kind of a surreal moment for me to get a call like that, saying, ‘Hey, can you help me out?’ Which, of course, I said, ‘Absolutely.’ I just went and did a Europe tour with ANTHRAX and MOTÖRHEAD, and now I’m getting ready to actually head off to India and Australia with them in February and March.”

On how it feels to be playing with ANTHRAX:

Dette: “It’s amazing, man. The first day that I started playing drums — a lot of people may or may not know this — the first album I ever got from the day I got my drum set was ‘Fistful Of Metal’ [by ANTHRAX], and literally, the first song I ever tried playing on drums was ‘Metal Thrashing Mad’. Actually, I [was] hanging out with Charlie and I told him that this morning, and he was, like, ‘Really?’ And I’m, like, ‘Yeah, really.’ [laughs] ANTHRAX, METALLICA and SLAYER, they were such a foundation of my style growing up, and I’ve been privileged now to actually play for two of those bands. It’s a very natural thing for me to play, but at the same time, seeing the back of their heads on stage, and Joey [Belladonna] is looking at me and he’s singing, and I’m just, like, ‘This is great.’ I guess you can say that I play with a lot of passion when I’m with those bands, ’cause it’s just absolutely passion and just an amazing experience.”

On how he got the call to be in SLAYER:

Dette: “Well, I was playing drums for TESTAMENT at the time, and my attorney was also SLAYER‘s attorney, and I got a call from, actually, a crew member in the SLAYER camp that said, ‘[Paul] Bostaph just left and you should try out.’ So, I asked my attorney and, long story short, he put us in touch together and I went down and auditioned. Again, SLAYER is one of those bands I’ve been playing forever, and so it was so natural, and I think we really felt that when we were in a room together. We rehearsed for two days and it just felt right, and they asked me to join the band at the end of our rehearsal the second night.”

On what he took away from the experience of playing with SLAYER:

Dette: “Well, so many things. I mean, one, it’s like my first experience playing with one of my true idol bands. Again, to temporarily replace Dave Lombardo, basically, even though I was replacing Paul, who, Paul‘s an amazing drummer in his own right. So many business things that I got to learn — just the music business in general, good and bad. But, again, just to have the opportunity to play for one of my all-time favorite bands and see the back of their heads every night… People would ask, ‘Was there anything bad about playing for SLAYER?’ And I would say, ‘Yeah, every time I go to a SLAYER show, I have to look at the back of their heads now. I can’t enjoy the show anymore.’ ‘Cause I would always be at SLAYER shows rocking out. I’d like to think I did it justice at the time I was with the band and it was just an amazing experience.”

SLAYER: We Do Not Agree With DAVE LOMBARDO’s Substance Or Timeline Of Events

SLAYER has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET regarding the band’s decision to replace drummer Dave Lombardo for the upcoming Australian tour:

SLAYER confirms that Jon Dette will drum for the band on its Australian tour that starts this Saturday, February 23 in Brisbane. As regards Dave Lombardo‘s Facebook post, SLAYER does not agree with Mr. Lombardo‘s substance or the timeline of the events, except to acknowledge that Mr. Lombardo came to the band less than a week before their scheduled departure for Australia to present an entirely new set of terms for his engagement that were contrary to those that had been previously agreed upon. The band was unable to reach an agreement on these new demands in the short amount of time available prior to leaving for Australia. There is more to the account than what Mr. Lombardo has offered, but out of respect to him, SLAYER will not be commenting further. SLAYER is grateful to its Australian fans for their understanding of this unfortunate last-minute change, and very much looks forward to seeing them at these shows.”

Lombardo released a statement last night indicating that he was being replaced for SLAYER‘s Australian dates after he requested access to detailed information and the necessary backup documents regarding how the band’s tour income was being distributed. According to the drummer, 90% of SLAYER‘s tour revenue is “being deducted as expenses, including the professional fees paid to management, costing the band millions of dollars and leaving 10% or less to split amongst the four of us.”

Shortly into the tour for SLAYER‘s 1986 album “Reign In Blood”, Lombardo left the group, citing financial concerns. Tony Scaglione of WHIPLASH was recruited to replace Lombardo; however, this lineup was short-lived, as Lombardo returned in 1987. In 1992, Lombardo left the group again due to friction with the other band members, particularly King. Paul Bostaph of FORBIDDEN took over as the band’s drummer for 1994’s “Divine Intervention” and 1996’s “Undisputed Attitude”, the latter being an LP of cover tunes. Following the recording of “Undisputed Attitude”, Jon Dette replaced Bostaph, who left to concentrate on other projects. Dette was fired a year later and Bostaph returned to the fold. In 2001, Bostaph left SLAYER for good and was replaced by a returning Lombardo. Although this reunion was initally announced as temporary, Lombardo has remained with the band ever since.

SLAYER has spent the past two years touring without guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who is still recovering from necrotising fasciitis, a flesh-eating disease, which he is believed to have gotten from a spider bite. Hanneman is being temporarily replaced on the road by EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt.

Prior to joining SLAYER, Dette appeared on TESTAMENT‘s “Live At The Fillmore” album, which came out in 1995.

Dette is currently playing with ANTHRAX as a temporary replacement for the band’s longtime drummer Charlie Benante, who “is dealing with personal issues right now and can’t leave” the U.S., according to ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian.

Discontent in the Slayer Camp? Dave Lombardo out?!

This statement has started to just make the rounds on the net.

Have there been a falling out with Lombardo and the rest of Slayer?  I can’t see if this is true how the other band members…namely Kerry King would find it acceptable for their management to be taking 90% of their revenue unless Dave was the only one getting 10% while Tom and Kerry were receiving a larger share without Dave’s knowing.

Either way it seems there is something amiss…stay tuned.

Statement From Dave Lombardo Regarding Slayer Australian Tour 2013

I want to personally apologize to all of our fans in Australia who have bought tickets for the tour expecting to see me in my usual place on the drums.

So that you all know the truth, as of the end of the business day on February 14th, I was notified that I would not be drumming for the tour in Australia. I’m saddened, and to be honest I am shocked by the situation.

Last year, I discovered 90% of Slayer’s tour income was being deducted as expenses including the professional fees paid to management, costing the band millions of dollars and leaving 10% or less to split amongst the four of us. In my opinion, this is not the way a band’s business should operate. I tried rectifying it by letting my band mates know, and Tom and I hired auditors to figure out what happened, but I was denied access to detailed information and the necessary back up documents.

I spent the Christmas and New Year holidays realizing I had toured all over the world in 2012, but yet, had not been paid (except a small advance) or provided a proper accounting for a full year’s sweat and blood. On top of this, I was told that I would not be paid until I signed a long form contract which gave me no written assurance of how much or on what basis management would deduct commissions, nor did it provide me access to the financial budgets or records for review. It also forbade me to do interviews or make statements having to do with the band, in effect a gagging order.

Last Monday, I sat down with Kerry and Tom to rehearse for Australia and to propose a new business model that I felt was the best way forward for Slayer to confidently protect itself so we could do what we do best . . . play for the fans. Kerry made it clear he wasn’t interested in making changes and said if I wanted to argue the point, he would find another drummer. On Thursday, I arrived at rehearsals at 1 pm as scheduled, but Kerry did not show. Rather, at 6:24 pm I received an email from the lawyers saying I was being replaced for the Australian dates.

I remain hopeful that we can resolve our issues. But once again, I sincerely apologize to all of our fans in Australia who spent their money expecting to see the 3 of us original Slayer members.

SLAYER’s Kerry King Talks New Album, Status Of Jeff Hanneman, 30th Anniversary Of Show No Mercy

While promoting SLAYER’s upcoming Soundwave appearances, guitarist Kerry King spoke to Brendan Crabb from Australia’s Themusic.com.au about a number of topics including the long-awaited follow-up to 2009’s World Painted Blood.

King is hopeful of releasing the record in 2013. “As usual, every time we get ready to put out a record, American Recordings changes distribution, so that always holds us up. So we’ve got three weeks ‘til we’re done in Australia, and hopefully all their pieces fall where they need to fall, we can get some contracts done and start recording. We’ve got plenty of music; I’m taking my days off in Australia to work on lyrics, so hopefully we’ll just get closer to the end product, so we’re not going to waste a lot of time in the studio. I think it’s pretty much Slayer. As a guitar player I try to come up with things I’ve never heard us do or maybe I’ve never heard anybody else do, but still in the parameters of super heavy music. If you get a surprise, I would say chances are it’s still heavy; you’re just not used to hearing heavy in that way.”

EXODUS’ Gary Holt continues to fill in for injured guitarist Jeff Hanneman live. “If he came in, knocked on my door in five minutes and said, ‘Hey dude, I’m ready, let’s go practice’, I’d say, ‘Good, get your gear, let’s go practice’,” King explains. “But until that day comes, I’ve gotta cover Slayer’s butt and have his gig filled in. ‘Cause I don’t want it to be a carousel, where there’s, if Gary can’t do it we get somebody else and if he can’t do it we get somebody else again. I want to have continuity. We told Gary when our schedule is and said, ‘Please keep it open’, because we don’t know when Jeff’s gonna be able to play guitar. Jeff’s kind of like a wait-and-see thing.”

When asked about the 30th anniversary of their debut, Show No Mercy, King reflects: “I wish somebody told us before Reign In Blood we didn’t need reverb,” he chuckles when reflecting upon their first full-length. “But it’s good shit, you know? People always ask me, ‘Do you think you should go re-record Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits?’ I say no, because those are a moment in time and that’s what Slayer was. If we were recording them again now, the way Slayer sounds… Rule number one: it would sound like a completely different record. Which could be good or bad, I don’t know. But people love those historically for what they are.”
