Evil Dead sequel news: Original series and remake sequel rumors out of SXSW

It should come as no surpise that there is already talks of a sequel to the Fede Alvarez-directed remake of EVIL DEAD, especially when you consider the overwhelmingly positive response the film received at this weekends SXSW premiere of the gore-laden flick. Couple that with the guaranteed box office bank the film will undoubtably rake in, it’s pretty much a no-brainer that the studio would demand a sequel.

During a QandA session following EVIL DEAD’s SXSW screening, Alvarez addressed the crowd stating that he has already begun work on a screenplay for a sequel, demonstrating the producers and the studios faith that they have a hit on their hands. While it hasn’t been set in stone as of yet, this is as close to an “official” announcement on the sequel as we can expect until the TriStar/Film District remake hits theaters on April 5.

Switching gears to other EVIL DEAD releated goodness, Ghost House Pictures producing partner Rob Tapert clarified earlier reports on the EVIL DEAD 4 rumors that have been running rampant on the internet, stating that the producers (and series creator/director Sam Raimi) were never talking about doing an Evil Dead 4 but actually doing a direct sequel to ARMY OF DARKNESS. In his own words:

“That would be Army of Darkness 2. Everybody calls it Evil Dead 4 but Army of Darkness wasn’t called Evil Dead anywhere except by the fans.”

Except that isn’t entirely true. The films original working title was EVIL DEAD 3 and the flick has been released in several territories under that title. But hey, we’ll just go with what the man says. EVIL DEAD 4. ARMY OF DARKNESS 2. I don’t care what they call it, just as long as they make it happen!

We’ll keep you updated on the status of both films as we hear it.

Extra Tidbit: Which sequel are you most looking forward to?

Sam Raimi to open the book of the dead once again with plans to write Evil Dead 4 this summer

Since the announcement of the remake for EVIL DEAD people have been wondering when we would see — if ever — an EVIL DEAD 4 from Sam Raimi. Well, Here’s a bit of mouth-watering news for you guys. Sam Raimi has just dropped a nugget of horror gold during some press rounds in London for his upcoming OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL.

I would love to make Evil Dead 4. My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.
It’s only two short sentences but my god do they carry a lot of weight. You had to know after producing the remake that it would get Raimi itching to revisit that world himself and bring us the long awaited EVIL DEAD 4. Obviously, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s happening and it could still be a LONG while before we hear anything on this in the future but it’s certainly enough to get excited about.

Lace up your boots. Horrible things are on the horizon!

NECRONOMICON Signs With SEASON OF MIST

Season Of Mist has announced the signing of Canadian extreme blackened death metal horde NECRONOMICON. The trio’s new album, “Rise of the Elder Ones”, will be released on June 10 (three days earlier in Europe).

Regarding the signing, the band released the following statement: “Many people know that for some years in the past NECRONOMICON have been through some really dark years and that starting with ‘The Return Of The Witch’, or what we called the return to the source, we rose out of that period with more determination and strength than ever. As for now, some months ago we had the opportunity to join forces and work with one of the most respected labels in the dark metal area. That’s why we decided to move on in that direction. Working with people that care, are professionals, and do what they said without trying to find excuses to not do what they agreed to. It is with honor that NECRONOMICON joined the Season Of Mist family and wish for this relationship to be long and prosperous.”

NECRONOMICON in May 2011 announced the addition of bassist Armaros to the group’s ranks.

Bassist Diego “D” left NECRONOMICON in 2010 in order to undertake “different professional and personal projects” that he wouldn’t be “able to do simultaneously with [his previous] band duties.”

NECRONOMICON‘s latest album, “The Return Of The Witch”, was released in June 2010 via Austria’s Napalm Records. The CD was mastered with reputed engineer Maor Appelbaum (HALFORD, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, THERION) and features guest appearances by Arianne Fleury (ex-AUGURY) and Roxanne Constantin (NEGATIVA, QUO VADIS), among others.
