Evil Dead sequel news: Original series and remake sequel rumors out of SXSW

It should come as no surpise that there is already talks of a sequel to the Fede Alvarez-directed remake of EVIL DEAD, especially when you consider the overwhelmingly positive response the film received at this weekends SXSW premiere of the gore-laden flick. Couple that with the guaranteed box office bank the film will undoubtably rake in, it’s pretty much a no-brainer that the studio would demand a sequel.

During a QandA session following EVIL DEAD’s SXSW screening, Alvarez addressed the crowd stating that he has already begun work on a screenplay for a sequel, demonstrating the producers and the studios faith that they have a hit on their hands. While it hasn’t been set in stone as of yet, this is as close to an “official” announcement on the sequel as we can expect until the TriStar/Film District remake hits theaters on April 5.

Switching gears to other EVIL DEAD releated goodness, Ghost House Pictures producing partner Rob Tapert clarified earlier reports on the EVIL DEAD 4 rumors that have been running rampant on the internet, stating that the producers (and series creator/director Sam Raimi) were never talking about doing an Evil Dead 4 but actually doing a direct sequel to ARMY OF DARKNESS. In his own words:

“That would be Army of Darkness 2. Everybody calls it Evil Dead 4 but Army of Darkness wasn’t called Evil Dead anywhere except by the fans.”

Except that isn’t entirely true. The films original working title was EVIL DEAD 3 and the flick has been released in several territories under that title. But hey, we’ll just go with what the man says. EVIL DEAD 4. ARMY OF DARKNESS 2. I don’t care what they call it, just as long as they make it happen!

We’ll keep you updated on the status of both films as we hear it.

SONY SETS A RELEASE DATE FOR RESIDENT EVIL 6

Via: Kevin Woods of Arrow in The Head

It’s the franchise that just won’t die!

Sony/Screen Gems has set a debut date for the next chapter in the long-running RESIDENT EVILfranchise, scheduling the as-yet-untitled film to hit theaters September 12, 2014. No word yet on whether series director Paul W.S. Anderson would be returning to helm or series star (and ultra-hottie) Milla Jovovich would be back to kick more ass, but I’m sure it is reasonably safe to assume that they will.

Further, no details on the plot have been released. We last saw Alice (Jovovich) in RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION holed up at the White House and facing a rather large threat with Wesker (Shawn Roberts) by her side, so I’m sure this latest sequel will pick up right where that one left off.

The RESIDENT EVIL series has been a bumpy ride so far, filled with many ups-and-downs, and many feel it’s time to retire the franchise. The first film was a groovy good time, followed by the lacklusterRESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE, picking back up steam with RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION andAFTERLIFE, but seriously dropping the ball with RETRIBUTION, which many consider to be the nadir of the series. Hopefully Sony/Screen Gems can give the franchise a fitting swan song with this next installment.

Milla Jovovich makes me happy in my pantal area.

Insidious Chapter 2 gets a release date change

While James Wan’s upcoming sequel to INSIDIOUS is still filming we’ve got a small bit of news to share regarding its release. Originally it was planned for an August 30th release but now has been moved ever so slightly to September 20th. It’s not a huge move like we saw CARRIE get when it was pushed a discouraging 7 months away from its original date.

Many of the original cast members have returned, including Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Barbara Hershey, and Ty Simpkins. The gorgeous Jocelin Donahue (THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL) has joined the project and is playing a young version of Lorraine Lambert.

Nothing here to worry about, just looks like a case of placing the film in a better competeing slot as it looks like the only other movies it will have to go against that week will be Hugh Jackman’s PRISONERS and Chris Hemsworth’s RUSH.
