Music Review: Zarthas Album: Reflections

I appreciate when bands try to write songs that are diverse and have a different sound.  I understand a lot of bands do not want to pigeon hole themselves into one certain sound or genre.  I appreciate that, I really do.  However, I also appreciate when those songs are catchy and normally when I hear a band that tries to write songs that stretch across a lot of different genres that is rarely the case.  With Zarthas, I feel that while they are talented musicianship wise they spread themselves a little thin trying to write so many songs that are so different from each other.

Reflections contain songs that range from hard rock, grunge, a little punk and one even reminded me a bit of some black metal vocally.  The result of this gumbo soup of music is, for me as a listener, I never could fully be engaged in the album.  I would hear one song that would sound ok, then the next song would change directions so much I would lose interest.  As a result Zarthas sounds like they are directionless and can’t decide what kind of music they are hoping to make.

There are some bright spots on the album however.  Namely the song ‘Riot Now’ which I feel is nice punk/hard rock song and captures what I feel is the band’s strongest skillset.  Which is making straight ahead hard rock songs.  While the album also contains the band’s weak points…which is making grunge type songs which are boring.

While Zarthas has talent, their talent seems to be strongest when they focus on hard rock and not grunge or extreme metal sounds.  As a result Reflections tries to lead the listener in too many directions which only results in the listener becoming lost and bored.

SUMMER IS HERE AND I AM FREE!  I had to say this because I have been tied up in school and unable to attend to music reviews like I would hope to.  Now that I have some free time it is nice to relax with some music that is a throwback to the late 70’s and early 80’s bands like ELO, Toto, Survivor and others.  The Night Flight Orchestra and their album Amber Galactic could have been an album from a forgotten band from these decades and placed in a time capsule and only recently discovered today.  Filled with synths, pop 80’s production and lyrics, Amber Galactic takes the listener on a musical journey back to a time when a kid would come home from school in the day but at night new worlds would be  revealed through the mysterious synthwave pop music he would listen to in his bedroom or watch on the late night TV program Night Flight.  Buy your ticket now for the Night Flight Orchestra because the journey to Amber Galactic is a long one, filled with wonders and sounds from a by-gone era. I have to admit I get a little lost/mixed up with all the thrash bands that have names that involve some kind of radioactive material or warfare.  There is Nuclear Assault, Toxic Holocaust and Municipal Waste and who knows what others.  Wouldn’t a Nuclear Assault cause a Toxic Holocaust which then would produce Municipal Waste?  Anyway…they are pretty cool names just sometimes I think I have to consult my Green Peace manual to see which eco-disaster is worse…oh wait…we are talking about metal bands aren’t we?  Well fuck the planet, lets rock!                Pure black metal bands are usually not my bag but there have been some to cross over into other genres where they have mutated into some other kind of hybrid that has grabbed my attention.  In the case of Malamorte, they have come out from being a pure black metal band and have become a band with a mixture of black/doom/thrash elements.  Because of this I found Satan Goes to Heaven to Destroy the Kingdom of Heaven a great listening experience.
