Movie Review: The Evil Dead Remake

Evil Dead Remake 020

Ahhh….the horror remake, the one thing that stirs up genre fanatics like no other.  Hollywood could pick an obscure horror title and decide to remake it and the fans of horror would shit themselves in a fury.  Pick a bonafide horror cult classic like Evil Dead and the horror community will eat their first born son to make sure they hate it.

My personal views on remakes in general is that I typically don’t mind them so much even though I know Hollywood is trying a bit too hard with them.  My view on horror re-makes is about the same.  I typically don’t mind as long as the movie is solid and offers a good time.  My counterpoint to all the horror fans who complain about their favorite movie being remade and that they should not be done is this…The Thing from John Carpenter.  The Thing is considered one of the greatest horror films and it was a remake.  So to all the horror whiners who hate horror remakes based on just the fact they are a remake…well go look at The Thing and shut up.

So what about our sacred cow of horror, Evil Dead?  Did the filmmakers do a faithful adaptation for the current generation of movie goers while adding something a bit new or did they just roll out a movie for a cash grab?  Well I think they did get some cash to grab from this but boy was it deserved. Evil Dead sequel news: Original series and remake sequel rumors out of SXSW

It should come as no surpise that there is already talks of a sequel to the Fede Alvarez-directed remake of EVIL DEAD, especially when you consider the overwhelmingly positive response the film received at this weekends SXSW premiere of the gore-laden flick. Couple that with the guaranteed box office bank the film will undoubtably rake in, it’s pretty much a no-brainer that the studio would demand a sequel.

During a QandA session following EVIL DEAD’s SXSW screening, Alvarez addressed the crowd stating that he has already begun work on a screenplay for a sequel, demonstrating the producers and the studios faith that they have a hit on their hands. While it hasn’t been set in stone as of yet, this is as close to an “official” announcement on the sequel as we can expect until the TriStar/Film District remake hits theaters on April 5.

Switching gears to other EVIL DEAD releated goodness, Ghost House Pictures producing partner Rob Tapert clarified earlier reports on the EVIL DEAD 4 rumors that have been running rampant on the internet, stating that the producers (and series creator/director Sam Raimi) were never talking about doing an Evil Dead 4 but actually doing a direct sequel to ARMY OF DARKNESS. In his own words:

“That would be Army of Darkness 2. Everybody calls it Evil Dead 4 but Army of Darkness wasn’t called Evil Dead anywhere except by the fans.”

Except that isn’t entirely true. The films original working title was EVIL DEAD 3 and the flick has been released in several territories under that title. But hey, we’ll just go with what the man says. EVIL DEAD 4. ARMY OF DARKNESS 2. I don’t care what they call it, just as long as they make it happen!

We’ll keep you updated on the status of both films as we hear it.

Extra Tidbit: Which sequel are you most looking forward to?

LORDI: New Video Interview Posted Online

Über Röck recently conducted an interview with Mr. Lordi and Mana of Finnish heavy metal monsters LORDI. You can now watch the chat below.

LORDI‘s new album, “To Beast Or Not To Beast”, was released on March 1 in Europe (excluding Finland) via AFM Records. The CD will be made available in North America on March 19 through The End Records.

“To Beast Or Not To Beast” was recorded last fall at WireWorld Studio in Nashville, Tennessee with renowned producer Michael Wagener (METALLICA, OZZY OSBOURNE, SKID ROW, DOKKEN, RAVEN, MEGADETH). The CD marks the recording debut of LORDI‘s new members, keyboardist Hella (replacing Awa) and drummer Mana (replacing Otus).

“The road to this album has truly been paved by hardships,” LORDI leader Mr. Lordi says. “However, the new lineup of the band has given us new and fresh touch and an energetic edge to the recording process, and to the album itself.”

He added: “The album cover painting is actually a part of a larger picture. The original artwork had this vintage-styled lady holding a horned skull, which, however, was not the main point of the art piece. There was something not quite right with the setting, so I made experiments with various versions and framings. Album title was ‘Upgradead’ at that point in time, and the painting was done with that title in mind. But now, with a changed concept of the artwork, the title did not seem to fit anymore. We did not consider it an A-class name either. Our guitarist Amen came up with the final title, which we felt suitable and perfect both for the cover artwork and the album.”

“To Beast Or Not To Beast” track listing:

01. We’re Not Bad For The Kids (We’re Worse)
02. I Luv Ugly
03. The Riff
04. Something Wicked This Way Comes
05. I’m The Best
06. Horrifiction
07. Happy New Fear
08. Schizo Doll
09. Candy For The Cannibal
10. Sincerely With Love
11. SCG6: Otus’ Butcher Clinic

LORDI previously worked with Wagener on 2010’s “Babez For Breakfast”, which sold around 1,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 43 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

Sam Raimi to open the book of the dead once again with plans to write Evil Dead 4 this summer

Since the announcement of the remake for EVIL DEAD people have been wondering when we would see — if ever — an EVIL DEAD 4 from Sam Raimi. Well, Here’s a bit of mouth-watering news for you guys. Sam Raimi has just dropped a nugget of horror gold during some press rounds in London for his upcoming OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL.

I would love to make Evil Dead 4. My brother and I plan to work on the script this summer.
It’s only two short sentences but my god do they carry a lot of weight. You had to know after producing the remake that it would get Raimi itching to revisit that world himself and bring us the long awaited EVIL DEAD 4. Obviously, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s happening and it could still be a LONG while before we hear anything on this in the future but it’s certainly enough to get excited about.

Lace up your boots. Horrible things are on the horizon!
