Sonata Arctica on kuin Suomen vastine In Flamesille; ei suinkaan musikaalisesti vaan sen suhteen, että teki bändi mitä tahansa studiossa tai lavalla, tuntuu rapaa tulevan niskaan. ”Sontiaisten” tuoreimman levyn tiimoilta viime keskiviikkona Jyväskylästä alkanut The Ninth Hour -kiertue on saanut sosiaalisessa mediassa osakseen rapaa niskaansa 13 biisin muodostavasta settilistasta. Taannoiset lehtijutut antoivat osviittaa bändin treenanneen ison määrän vaihtoehtoisia kappaleita tulevalle kiertueelle. No, mielipiteitähän mahtuu maailmaan yhtä monta kuin on ihmistäkin. Itse olen sitä osastoa, joka kehrää tyytyväisyydestä, kun bändit osoittavat seisovansa uusien tuotoksiensa takana ja soittavat uutta materiaalia kunnolla sisään. Juuri tällaista tapausta sain todistaa perjantaina Oulun Areenalla.

Insomnium on itselleni bändi, jonka otteet ovat parantuneet tasaiseen tahtiin levy levyltä. Uunituoreella Winter’s Gate -täysipitkällä soitto ja laulu alkavat olla lähellä huippuunsa hioutunutta timanttia – etenkin, kun levyn eeppistä 40 minuutin mittaista ainoaa kappaletta siivittää mukaansatempaava viikinkitarina. Tarina juontaa juurensa vajaan kymmenen vuoden takaiseen yhtyeen basistilaulaja Niilo Seväsen kirjoittamaan Talven portti -novelliin. Kunnianhimoiset suunnitelmat kannatti, ja Insomnium piti lupauksensa soittaa kappaleen kokonaisuudessaan palattuaan takaisin esiintymislavoille uuden levyn tiimoilta.

W.A.S.P., the legenday hard rock band from Los Angeles, USA. On tour with a new album called Gotgatha and in Finland with four concerts. Heavy metal week is going on in Finland and nothing could be better… or could it? Yes, it could, let me say. The fact is W.A.S.P. released a new album, which was the first one in six years and that was the longest gap between W.A.S.P.-records. And the band launched a European tour and of course there were a few shows in Finland once again: W.A.S.P. has had concerts in Finland since 1985 and I think they will continue to do shows here until the band quits for good. Last show before this tour was in the summer in Lokalahti’s Karjarock Festival. Turku (Finnish town) is a second home to Doug Blair (because of the Turku Rock Academy School), so it’s not a big surprise that they have so many concerts here. But anyway, it’s very cool, that the band feels very comfortable here in Finland and in Seinäjoki many people came to see this band once again in the middle of the week. The crowd had fun, except I didn’t: maybe two words, which describes my feelings from the gig, would be ”boring” and ”routine”. Of course there were also good things from the evening, but unfortunately that wasn’t enough. Let’s see how I felt about this show. Ten years ago, Norma Jean released their second album called O God, the Aftermath.  When I picked the cd up at the store (those were the archaic days when you usually had to go out and physically purchase cds), I didn’t realize at the time how influential that album would be on my life. To this day, I still listen to it all the time, and every time is just as amazing as the second time I listened to it… because nothing could ever top the first time I listened to it. Concert review: Nightwish Cruise 9-10.6.2015

Every Finn knows the infamous cruises to Tallinn or Stockholm. Lots of drunken people, crappy buffet food and even worse house bands performing evergreen tangos to the seniors. Luckily sometimes there’s a few good exceptions to the formula and these nights were one of those. In last September Nightwish announced that they will be doing two concerts on the cruise ship from Turku to Stockholm. Both nights were sold out really fast but luckily we got a cabin for the second night. Continue reading Concert review: Nightwish Cruise 9-10.6.2015
