…..day 1.

I didn’t know directions from the back parking lot of Taqueria Los Comales (convenient free parking) to where I was going, but I wandered in the general direction from which I could hear the low, rumbling sound of metal pulsing ominously through the warm summer air and eventually ended up at my destination: Toyota Park where the 2nd annual Chicago Open Air Festival was taking place.

Around the festival, you could find a lot of unique experiences such as craft vendors, the Heavy Tiki Bar, the Headbangers Bier Hall, meet and greets with artists, and a wide range of unique and delicious food like grilled cheeses, pulled pork barbeque, burrito bowls, farm to table vegetarian options, donuts, pizza… this festival had by far the best food options I have ever seen at an event like this. ACCEPT just keeps that metal train rolling like a juggernaut that just can’t be stopped.  Since releasing ‘Blood of Nations’ back in 2010, ACCEPT have been the recipient of a revitalized career that most bands of their age could only dream of and all the younger bands would hope they could only have 1/10th of the success of.  Since their comeback album, ACCEPT has released hit album after hit album filled with classic metal riffs and great lyrical themes.  Continue reading Music Review: ACCEPT Album: The Rise of Chaos

I’ve been out of the review game for a while, but when Josh “Crimson” Gibson, former frontman for Kill Ritual contacted me about a new album he’s working on I couldn’t pass it up. Gibson’s vocal contributions were pretty phenomenal and I was curious how things would hold up in a new band. In summary: did not disappoint. Though Gibson didn’t show off the vocal range he displayed on Eyes of Medusa it is obvious he has not lost his chops, delivering lyrics in a fashion worthy Rob Halford. I Know A Lie especially gives him room to show what he is capable of.

Musically, based on the four tracks I’ve heard, the album is solidly grounded in classic metal. As I was listening at one point a co-worker said, “Dude, that reminds me of early Judas Priest!” Gibson’s influences show through, and that is not a bad thing, as he has written great songs with his own spin on things. And yes, he wrote, composed, performed, produced and tracked everything. And it is tight.

So what is next for Josh and Seven Days Straight? While Akili performed the drum parts in the studio, a permanent drummer is being sought. Gibson has already found a bass player and second guitarist. Given his attention to detail, they’re going to be top notch. Now they need a label to release this album. Someone please make this happen, because something this good needs to be out there.
