Music Review: Zarthas Album: Reflections

I appreciate when bands try to write songs that are diverse and have a different sound.  I understand a lot of bands do not want to pigeon hole themselves into one certain sound or genre.  I appreciate that, I really do.  However, I also appreciate when those songs are catchy and normally when I hear a band that tries to write songs that stretch across a lot of different genres that is rarely the case.  With Zarthas, I feel that while they are talented musicianship wise they spread themselves a little thin trying to write so many songs that are so different from each other.

Reflections contain songs that range from hard rock, grunge, a little punk and one even reminded me a bit of some black metal vocally.  The result of this gumbo soup of music is, for me as a listener, I never could fully be engaged in the album.  I would hear one song that would sound ok, then the next song would change directions so much I would lose interest.  As a result Zarthas sounds like they are directionless and can’t decide what kind of music they are hoping to make.

There are some bright spots on the album however.  Namely the song ‘Riot Now’ which I feel is nice punk/hard rock song and captures what I feel is the band’s strongest skillset.  Which is making straight ahead hard rock songs.  While the album also contains the band’s weak points…which is making grunge type songs which are boring.

While Zarthas has talent, their talent seems to be strongest when they focus on hard rock and not grunge or extreme metal sounds.  As a result Reflections tries to lead the listener in too many directions which only results in the listener becoming lost and bored.

Finland’s Mausoleum Gate Releasing ‘Into a Dark Divinity’ September 8 on Cruz Del Sur Music

MAUSOLEUM GATE’s 2014 self-titled debut album was not as much of a revelation as it was a reminder of how vintage metal should be played. Bucking virtually every modern production trend, the Finns greeted audiences with a warm analog production sound, flanked by the star-gazing vocals of V-P Varpula and the classy twin guitar action of
Count LaFey and Kasperi Puranen. Critical and fan acclaim soon followed, along with key festival appearances at Keep It True and Muskelrock, with many hailing
MAUSOLEUM GATE as one of the most exciting new retro metal bands on the scene. Continue reading Finland’s Mausoleum Gate Releasing ‘Into a Dark Divinity’ September 8 on Cruz Del Sur Music

Music Review: Crazy Lixx Album: Ruff Justice

In today’s world there are so many ways of discovering new bands and metal without having to rely on the opinions of a major media outlet, i.e. MTV.  Now with everything so interconnected with the internet and technology a person can seek out, and in my case, get lucky and stumble upon cool bands by pure accident while enjoying a cool new video game.

The band I speak of is Crazy Lixx. A glam/hard rock outfit coming out of Sweden that if a person didn’t know better, would think they were a band that literally came out of the 80’s since they re-create that Sunset Strip glam rock sound so well.  The video game I speak of is the new Friday the 13th The Game which was recently released by Gun Media.  Both Crazy Lixx and Gun Media paired up to make some music to be included in the game that can be heard when camp counselors turn on radios to distract or trick Jason, before they get their head chopped off.  The main song the band contributed to the game is ‘XIII’ which is fantastic and really captures the feel for the game and the movies it was based on.  In fact if you have seen Friday the 13th: Jason Lives and heard Alice Cooper’s ‘He’s Back, the Man Behind the Mask’ Then you will know kind of what to expect from this song.  There are also two other songs included on Ruff Justice that are based around the F13 theme, these are ‘Killer’ and ‘Live Before I Die’.  Both of which are excellent songs.  ‘XIII’ and ‘Live Before I Die’ are more fast paced songs while ‘Killer’ is more slow tempo. New Shiraz Lane material coming up already later this year

Finnish young rock dynamite Shiraz Lane will return to European venues in October and November 2017, supporting their great fellow countrymen Brother Firetribe, who are celebrating their 15th anniversary this year!
Shiraz Lane´s been working on their 2nd album in Stockholm for the whole year with a Swedish songwriter/ producer Per Aldeheim (Def Leppard, Pain, Fatboy, Soilwork…). The album will be out in early 2018, and the guys are super happy about both with their results in the studio and these upcoming Fall live dates:
“We are extremely excited to join forces and support Brother Firetribe through Europe during the upcoming Autumn of 2017. It will be a pleasure to revisit some of the awesome venues and embrace the atmosphere we were so warmly welcomed on our last tour, and are thrilled to bring our caravan to new destinations for your eyes and ears to witness. You might even have an exclusive chance to hear some new material we have been working so hard on throughout the year. Perhaps we might even release a single before the leaves fall from the trees? Time will tell..!”
Shiraz Lane will continue the album´s vocal recordings in Gröndahl Studios in this month and will play live this Summer still in Üferrock (DE), Summer Breeze (DE) and Hair Metal Heaven (UK), before focusing on the European tour, beginning on the 11th of October.
