Interview Kilmara

Interview Kilmara, melodic metal band from Spain.

Hello Daniel, how are you? Introduce the band and when was it formed?
Cheers Carla! Doing great thanks. Kilmara are: Javi Morillo on drums, Didac Pla on bass, John Portillo and Kike Torres on guitars, and myself (Daniel Ponce) on vocals. The band was formed in the early 2000’s first as Jadde and then changed name to Kilmara.

You guys are preparing a new album?
That’s right, we are currently working with our brand new line up on the composition of our next album which we will try to record by the end of this year with our friend and producer Roland Grapow.

Latest release of yours is ”Love Songs And Other Nightmares”. Talk about it a few things.
It was released in 2014 via Sony Music, and for the band, it was their second chance recording in Slovakia at Grapow studios with Roland at the helm. Truly an incredible experience! Also it has meant the greatest sales success for the band and from it, came Kilmara’s first ever professional video clip from the song Cold Rain. And also many of the bands live hits are from that album. So a really important record for us indeed…

What can you tell me about the other releases of the band?
Well both previous records before ”Love Songs and Other Nightmares” have a place in our hearts and bring back amazing memories of those times when the band recorded them. The first album Hunting Dreams, was full of youthful energy and you could hear a band willing to show the world who they were. The second one, Don’t Fear the Wolf, gave us much more popularity in Spain as well as international recognition. It also meant our first ever professional recording experience as I mentioned before with Mr. Roland Grapow.

When the band was formed it had the name of Jadde, later in 2003 you are turned to be Kilmara.
Yes, as Jadde with our first singer we were singing in spanish. So when Chris Wolf, who is German, entered the band and we decided to continue in english, we decided that a name change would also be right for us.

What are your influences?
Wow! That would be an endless answer if we were to say all of our influences one by one… jejeje But of course we love the greats like; Maiden, Metallica, Helloween, Megadeth, Savatage, Manowar, Dream Theater, Rage, Dio, Guns n’ Roses… But also each of the members has a distinct taste for music and we can sum up all kinds of styles even if they don’t influence our sound directly. You can find us listening to everything from prog, folk/viking, power, thrash, speed, true, doom, black, death, goth, hardcore, hard rock or classic to even a bit of pop sometimes! Oh and I almost forgot, Basil Poledouris’ Conan the Barbarian Soundtrack is essential!!!

As you are from Spain, tell me how do you see Kilmara in the Spanish metal scene.
The Spanish scene is quite a healthy one and we are lucky to have some of the greatest metal fans in the world right here! So for us it’s a pleasure belonging and being a part of it. We have also worked hard and persevered to make Kilmara a well known name around our national scene.

Where people can see you next live?
Our next concert wil be in May in Barcelona at the Doctor Metal Fest. We are also studying offers to play some international festivals that we hope to confirm soon. But this year our main objective is writing and recording our new album.

Something to tell for the band supporters?
Thank you so much to all our fans and to everyone that supports us in any way throuh our Facebook page, buying our music, our merch, coming to our gigs and spreading the word. We are really grateful and we don’t take all of this for granted!! Hope to see all of you soon!

Thank you for this one, cheers!
Thank you Carla! It was a real pleasure talking with you and until next time, take care! RAGE AND FIRE!
