Selfmachine is a Dutch Modern metal band that have released their debut album via WormHoleDeath records last year. Steven, the band’s frontman had some time to answer for this interview about Selfmachine.
Hi Steven, how are you?
I’m having a bit of a cold and feel a little sick. However, that did not stop me from recording the last song for the preproduction of our second album today. The recording went okay, despite my cough and running nose. No rest for the wicked! We’re all really excited about this new record and we want to get it out there as soon as possible!!
Tell me when was Selfmachine founded?
John and myself were the last to join the band to complete the line-up. This was in December 2011. Before that Mark and Michael (and later Ben) had been working together for roughly a year, writing songs, jamming and trying out different stuff that eventually turned into our debut album ‘Broadcast Your Identity’.
Last year you have released your debut album via WormHoleDeath records, ”Broadcast Your Identity”. Tell me about it.
This album is all about putting ourselves out there and letting people know who we are. It is also about self exploration and finding out who we are as a band. We recorded it ourselves and it was mixed by Stef Hartog. I think we might have broken Stef, because shortly after finishing our album, he sold all of his studio gear and moved on to photography. You can’t blame the guy for preferring the company of sexy models over scruffy metalheads! Anyway,… after finishing the album we landed a distribution/promotion deal at Wormholedeath/Aural Music. That’s when the real fun started. I can’t believe how long ago it all feels, although it’s only been a year and a half!
Have you got good reviews about the album?
Hell yeah! Pretty much all of the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Sure, there was the odd one that hated our guts, but that’s fine. You can’t please everyone and you can’t be loved without getting some occasional hate. And we received a LOT of love!! The website http://globalmetalapocalypse.weebly.com even named us ‘Best Dutch release of 2014’ and gave us a mind blowing score of 10/10! So I guess that’s means we achieved perfection and can stop making music now, right? Haha, no way!!
What are the lyrical themes?
In Selfmachine there a broadly speaking 2 ways of approaching the lyrics. Number one is looking at personal issues and struggles and analyse those as if I were a machine. Process the information and come to some sort of conclusion. The second way is looking at the outside world, the big corporate machine, the social structures ect. and describe them through my eyes. So in short: 1. the self, as if it were a machine. 2. The machine, as seen by self.
Are you going to release a new album soon?
We hope so! All the songs are written and as I’m writing this, I am receiving new pre-production mixes in my e-mail. So when they are completed we are having a sit down with the wonderful folks at Wormholdeath to discuss how, where and with whom we are going to record this baby. We’ll know more about a release date when all that is settled. But 2016 for sure!!
Apart from our usual influences like Killswitch Engage, Soilwork and Periphery we have lately been listening to a lot of old school funk music. One of our favourite bands has always been Tower of Power and, as far as groove goes, they just can’t be beat. We were looking for new ways to approach the groove in our music and this turned out to be just the fresh influence that we needed. So be ready to put on your dancing shoes once this new record hits the shelves!
Are there any shows confirmed for this year?
A couple of local (Dutch) shows. We are playing Occultfest in Hoogeveen in 2 weeks and that promises be a lot of fun. Earlier this year we did our first big European tour, supporting Ferium and The Agonist. That was an amazing experience and the highlight of our career so far. After that we decided that we really wanted to focus on making this new record so that we can hit the road again as soon as possible!!
