Interview with Iliana Tsakiraki, the vocalist of the Greek Symphonic metal band Enemy Of Reality.
By Carla Morton
Greetings Iliana, how are you?
Ι’m very well dear, thank you for your interest!
Tell me when was Enemy Of Reality founded?
We were formed in 2013 in Athens, Greece by me, Steelianos ( the axe-man),Philip (drums),Thanos( bass ,brutal vocals) and Marianthi ( keyboard).
The debut album was release last year entitled ”Rejected Gods”. Tell me about it.
’’Rejected Gods’’ is our debut album and it features 10 tracks in the genre of symphonic metal, with a few influences of progressive metal. The album includes a 4-track sequence, based on the Greek myth of Orpheus & Eurydice. However, in this version the story is narrated by one of the Maenads (female followers of Dionysus) who tells a story of love and tragedy, while at the end of the myth it turns out that she was among the women that killed Orpheus, as they ripped him apart with their own hands. In more detail, the track ‘Her Descending Ghost’ begins the story with the tragic death of Eurydice by snakebite, shortly after her wedding. ’The Bargaining’ is about the descent of Orpheus to the Underworld, where he faces Hades in an attempt to claim back his wife’s soul. On ‘Grief Divine’ Orpheus starts ascending back to Earth with Eurydice quietly following him, while in a moment of mistrust and agony he ignores the only warning of Hades that was not to look back at her before they have both reached the surface. Finally, on ‘Torn Apart’ Orpheus returns to Earth alone, where he mourns the loss of his wife for a second time. At that time, he gets surrounded by the Maenads who, out of jealousy and anger, tear him apart limb from limb and throw his head and lyre in the river Evros.
Also, the album features guest performances by:
– Ailyn Giménez (Sirenia)
– Mike LePond (Symphony X)
– Androniki Skoula (Chaostar)
– Maxi Nil (Jaded Star, ex-Visions of Atlantis).
Have you got good reviews about it?
We’re very happy about the reviews on the album because they’re extremely positive and enthousiastic. But we’re happier about the live reviews that state the album sounds even better played live.
Are you going to release new materials soon?
It ‘s been a year since the debut was released and we’ve already started the pre-production of the next one!
What are the band’s influences?
Ourselves, really. We don’t create a track in order to sound like someone else, the only criteria is that we like it and it represents us. But for sure, it ‘s mostly symphonic metal with progressive elements.
Any shows confirmed for this year?
We were able to participate in large festivals around the world this year. This helped to spread the word about our work and gain more fans.
We had the honor to perform at the MFVF in Belgium along with Therion, Xandria, etc. At the Dames of Darkness (UK) as the main support to Leaves’ Eyes, also as the main support with Anneke and SepticFlesh in our country. A few days ago we played at the Artmania Festival in Romania in front of many thousand people along with Saturnus,Anathema and Apocalyptica. In October we’ll appear at the Maximum Rock Festival (Romania) with Epica, Annihilator and many more. There are many other plans we can’t release before the official announcements though.
Do you have a message for people who enjoy the band?
Of course, it’s those people, our fans, that give us the strength to carry on doing what we do. We love and thank them so much. Greece is a country with many difficulties for the genre we serve.
Thank you for your time, all the best Iliana!
Thank you very much for your time too dear! My best wishes to you!
