Now I’m sure some of you might be asking “Callum, where have you been this past month?” well needless to say that like most people during that time of year I’ve been very busy, but I’m back now. Ready to spend 2015 praising great music and giving a giant middle finger to the rest. Call me OCD but I was searching for a new album to write about that hasn’t come out yet instead of albums that came out 2 – 3 months ago and we have Alpha Tiger. By the way a quick message to the labels that might be reading this before I start, when searching through the albums I noticed that nearly all of them came out last October and November. Now we rock/metal fans love our bands and we always want to support them but we only have so much time and money to support so many, so be careful not to over saturate the market. Now that I got that out of the way it’s time to get in to the first album of the year by a band that I have heard for the first time.

The songs I enjoyed the most and recommend are: ‘Long Way To Redemption’, ‘Identity’ and ‘Closer Than Yesterday’.

The things I liked about the album is firstly the introduction, normally on metal albums there’s just a load of random gimmicky sounds that make no sense at all. But something about this intro lets you know how good it is going to be. The sounds and music: solid, the lyrics: solid. The album is very well paced and I really enjoyed ‘Closer Than Yesterday’ because it sounds like a classic AOR song that would be playing at the end credits of an 80’s action movie. And of course it has a great end.

The things that I didn’t like about the album are that despite my praises it doesn’t really stick out compared to other things. It has the classic 70’s/80’s feel and those fans will not be disappointed. But it’s more nostalgia than anything. My view might change in time as it often does but I really don’t see myself listening to it over and over again as I feel it’s not very memorable. If your looking for something new and exciting I don’t think you are going to find it here, like I said this is for the metal fans that have already heard this kind of thing 100 times before.

That said I think it’s still safe to say that Alpha Tiger has set the mark for 2015 and it will be interesting to see if any other band this year will be able to meet these standards. I also personally wonder if a band will release another album this year that will score a perfect rating again… we shall see. As for this one if you have any money left or have been given any music vouchers for Christmas, this is a great album to start the year of.
