‘There are winners and losers…and then there is ACCEPT’
Accept have long been considered a metal band that really laid the foundation for many future bands we have today and was one of the cinder blocks of German heavy metal in the 80’s. While people with only a passing knowledge of Accept will most likely remember the song ‘Balls to the Wall’, the band has a vast catalog of material that offers much more to a metal listener. With songs like ‘Princess of the Dawn’, ‘Fast as a Shark’ and ‘Metal Heart’, Accept have always been a band that have maintained a steady stream of anthem pounding metal hits that have united metal fans across generations.
Sadly, sometime in the early 90’s Accept decided to call it a day and for all intents and purposes the metal world were without one of the great metal bands that emerged in the 80’s. Then in 2009 the band reformed under the command of guitarist Wolf Hoffman and bassist Peter Baltes, Accept recruited a new singer, Mark Tornillo and unleashed ‘Blood of the Nations’ and it was as if the band was on a mission to destroy anyone who got in their way. Since then, Accept has been setting the metal world on fire both in the studio and in the live setting.
Now it is 2014 and Accept are touring in support of ‘Blind Rage’ their newest album. When I saw the band was coming to Finland I was quick to make sure I arranged to see the show as I never had an opportunity in Tennessee or when I was younger to see the band live. So what can be said for the new age Accept and how they deliver live?
Short answer…Accept kicks major ass live.
Long answer. Accept were playing to a sold out show at the Pakkahuone in Tampere, Finland. It was refreshing to see that the band was drawing not only a sold out show but also age groups of all kinds. I saw younger teens, young adults and the older fans all mixed into one crowd which shows that Accept has been able to appeal to both the newer generation of metal fans while still keeping the appeal to the older fan base.
Right from the beginning of the set with the song ‘Stampede’ Accept rolled out song after song of German crunching metal in the only way Accept can. Fast, catchy Teutonic anthem blasting metal! Accept’s songs have always had a fist punching anthem quality and unique precision that really gives their songs a almost ‘militaristic’ sound and purpose and live the songs really get the crowd worked in a frenzy and unites them in a way that only Accept can.
It was great to see the crowd chant along to songs like ‘Princess of the Dawn’, ‘Fast as a Shark’ and ‘Balls to the Wall’ but also to the new material like ‘Stalingrad’, ‘Pandemic’ and ‘Teutonic Terror’. I also want to say it wasn’t just a few in the crowd chanting but the entire sold out crowd which made the show really have that extra special touch. The band has that unique ability to really engage the crowd and make you feel as if you are being played the songs to personally and not to a large crowd which is a great gift for a band to have.
For me, hearing Accept live for the first time was really a special treat for me. I felt welcomed and like I was in a community of like minded metal heads. While the band may have got their first fame in the 80’s, the band showed on this night that they deserve to be looked at as much more than an 80’s throwback band and they can make contemporary metal music while also sounding like classic Accept and delivering a blistering live performance that you won’t soon forget. Also purchase ‘Blind Rage’ their new album as it is a killer album and will not disappoint.
If you get a chance to see Accept live, and they are coming ANYWHERE near you, I implore you go out and catch the show you will not be disappointed. There are winners and losers…and then there is ACCEPT’.
