I recently got a press kit for a movie called ‘Cybernatural’. While on the surface it may appear like ‘just another found footage movie’ the premise and the idea behind the film actually makes the found footage angle the best avenue for this film.
Cybernatural takes our current problems/addiction with social media, the internet and cyberbullying and weaves a interesting tale of horror out of that mix.
From the press kit synopsis, “While video chatting one night, six high school friends receive a Skype message from a classmate who killed herself exactly one year ago. At first they think it’s a prank, but when the girl starts revealing the friends’ darkest secrets, they realize they are dealing with something from beyond this world, something that wants them dead. Told entirely from a young girl’s computer desktop, CYBERNATURAL redefines “found footage” for a new generation of teens.”
Producer Timur Bekmambetov presents CYBERNATURAL – a new experience in horror – an acknowledgement that the terrors of modern life no longer take place in forests or graveyards, but on the screens we stare at for hours every day. The horrors are many… Sites where teens can anonymously cyberbully their peers… Sites where angry lovers can post nude photos of their exes… Sites encouraging the victimized to kill… Sites where those victimized post videos of their suicides for others to see… And of course… sites where you can reach out to those dead. Where you can conjure…CYBERNATURAL is the first of its kind. A first-person exploration of the terrors of our connected experience…
Cybernatural seems to be a movie that has a very interesting premise and taps into a current social problem and also our current cultural landscape like many classic horror films of the past have done.
