Well, well, well. What do we have here? Well none other than the mighty Thrash Masters, Sodom rolling out their new release ‘Epitome of Torture’ to destroy the masses of unbelievers! Sodom have been Thrash Veterans for a long time in the never ending Heavy Metal War and have garnered quite a following through the years. I have to admit though I had never enlisted in Sodom’s shock trooper ranks before. I always signed up for the Power Metal infantry. So ‘Epitome of Torture’ is my first true listen to the band, even though I have known they have been out there in the trenches for years. So how was did my first foray to the front lines of death and mayhem go with Sodom? Well my friends prepare to launch the first wave assault on your eardrums and enemies for none will survive the attack!
There is nothing I can say here that that the music doesn’t say for itself on ‘Epitome of Torture’. It’s Thrash Metal, it’s brutal, it’s violent and if you are against it you better get ready to be steamrolled into oblivion because ‘Epitome of Torture’ will destroy all who stand in its way or oppose it. The guitars are pure thrash with the speed and aggression you would find in bands like Exodus. Tom Angelripper’s razor like vocals will shred the meat off your bones and leave you crumbled on the ground bleeding and dying. The drums are bombastic and will ground your bones to dust, and the sound on the album is truly great as you can tell it’s done by guys who know what they are doing and have been doing it for a long, long time.
As for stand out tracks I have four. ‘My Final Bullet’, ‘Cannibal’, ‘Invocating the Demons’ and ‘Into the Skies of War’. All feature some kind of hook or chorus to really help you get into the songs and the guitars are brutal in all of them and the vocals are mean and evil.
If you are a Thrash fan or a fan of Sodom, there is nothing here I can say. You are already going to be buying this album. If you are a metal fan or looking for something new to get the blood pumping, Sodom’s ‘Epitome of Torture’ will do that for you. Just make sure you don’t try to stop the resulting onslaught you will unleash because if you do, you will be destroyed in the process.
